A couple of weeks ago, I discussed the current event and the debate going on about if art should be taught in schools. I was curious to see how the debate was going and how the comments were. Again, 70% of the majority said yes and 30% of the majority said no, but this time there was more comments on why the people said no. Last time there was only comments for saying yes and no comments for the reason why the 30% of people said no. The negative comments were discussing that art is pointless, art is evil, math and science are king, it should be an option, and art is not something that everyone has to know. The comments do not give out names for, but some of the comments talked about future careers not needing art and if someone is not good at art, they can get down on themselves for not being talented. One person took art in a religious perspective and connected art to worshipping the devil. Many of the other comments discussed art should be an option and not a requirement. That is should be either an after school class of if people are really talented with art.

A poll was taken by the Harris Poll about how art benefits Americans and the attitudes Americans have on art education. The statistics show..
93% of Americans agree that the arts are vital because it provides a "well-rounded education for children." 86% of Americans agree on an art education helps people on improving their attitude towards school and an education. 83% of Americans believe with an art education that children will have a better communication with adults and peers. 79% of Americans agree that with having an art education it brings back the missing pieces that education does not have. 54% of Americans said on a scale of one to ten that the importance of having an art education would be a 10. 79% of Americans believe it's important to have an art education because it helps children and adults get more involved in school and everyday life. Melissa Taylor wrote an opinionated article about the six main reasons why art education should not be cut from school budgets, but rather be kept at all times.
RACA stands for the Rome Area Council for the arts. It has been around for 40 years and is still striving to stay alive. For four decades this council has been around to bring the art culture to the students and bring people in the community together. The membership has always been full with so many workers and people, but recently the membership was been underway. The members are the main contributors and are the doers in the council. They are the ones spreading joy and the art culture around the community. Without them, then no one can help spread the art. The members believe in art and how it impacts the students so positivity. That is why they ask for members to sign up all the time and want more members because without them then there is no council and with no council, then the community of Rome in Gorgia has no art culture within it.
This article written by Dr. Cathy Sweet discusses why the art education is a need for every school. When times get tough it's hard to find money for the basics when part of the money is going to the art classes. At times the schools have to take the money out of the art classes in order to keep the other classes going. Some researchers believe the art classes have no beneficial to the students, but no one argues about the art programs impacting students self esteem in a positive way and help grow student and teacher relationships. Most schools would rather take the easy route to fixing the budget problem instead of looking for other ways that would be fit everyone. "we’d rather look for a quick fix than just do the simplest, most obvious thing: provide high quality art education in our schools." (mpnnow.com, Sweet)
http://m.mpnnow.com/article/20090528/NEWS/305289916 A sophomore student named Tyleah Hawkins at Howard University decided to focus on the impact of funding cuts on the art programs in public schools in poor communities. This sophomore discussed about how many schools across the nation have taken away their art programs because they state governments had to take away the funding. This is because the state governments have to balance out the spending and their budget. Because the governments have to do this, the schools have no other option then to get rid of their art and music programs or cut the spending severely. Narric Rome had to say, "The cuts have been occurring for the past couple of decades.. however, with this recession, many arts advocates such as myself do not have a clue when some programs will be brought back." Which this is true. These programs could not come back until the economy comes back into shape or it could not come back until another decade. It all just depends. The writer states that art and music is just as important as reading and math. All the programs are academically beneficial.
By not having the art and music programs for some schools, it can cause problems on student's graduation credits. For some schools. they won't allow students to graduate or to barely pass if they do not have their art and music credits. Art and music are needed because based on research art education helps improve the student's standardized test scores. "Art education gives children a place where they can express themselves and channel negative emotion into something positive." (Tlyeah Hawkins) When I was doing my poster for last weeks project I did it on the Socialist Party. When I was reading their platform and all their ideas I came across their ideas on arts and culture. "The Socialist Party believes that art is an integral part of daily life, and should not be treated as a commodity produced by the activity of an elite group. All members of society should have ample oppor-tunities for participation in art and cultural activities." Over all this was the socialist's main idea on the arts and culture. Along with this, the members had the ideas to put full support on having incomes and grants on artists and performers, support on making school art classrooms and workplaces to also be shown as cultural centers, support on colored people, women, and disabled to be artists and performers if they choose to be, and full support for artists to form union groups to protect their rights. The Socialist Party also want to put full funding on all the art programs for all ages and full funding on all school and community art classes. The members also want to have funding on all the art and cultural building in the United States and to have it open for all. With that, the members decided to keep preserving all the present and future art and culture buildings for all the citizens to enjoy. The Socialist party want art and culture in the community and have good ideas to keep it in the community for as long as they want too. They believe in art being good for the people and that it helps with everyday life and that is why art and culture should be funded instead of going away.
Americans for the Arts Action Fund is an organization built to bring art back into the education. Arts Action Fund was created to put their time, money, and political clout on art and to bring it back to the schools that cannot afford the arts program or chose to place it another curriculum. This action fund is a non profit organization and only excepts donations if people provide it for the people. Arts Action Fund has four main goals set out to accomplish.
🔹"Stand up for every child's right to a comprehensive, high quality arts education." 🔹"Promote public policies that provide individuals and families affordable access to all forms of the arts." 🔹"Rally national support against attacks to the arts." 🔹"Build political influence to ensure bipartisan support for the arts." This funding group was created in 2004 and has been funding till this day. The members send members to Congress throughout the year to explain their reasoning on why art should be brought back in the community. This funding group is an interest group and would connect to our current unit now. It was founded on people who had the interest and desire to love art and to have everyone else love it too. The members of this interest group keep fighting everyday on what they love and to always have it being brought back into the nation. As of now many people can sign up and participate in the action now and that is what I am currently doing. I signed up to keep up with the current actions the members are taking place in order to accomplish their goals and finally bring art back in the education programs. As I was researching current events I came across a website called debates.org. On there, the members of the website listed one question and that was "should art be taught in schools?" People were allowed to vote and voice their opinion on their answer. As a conclusion 70% said yes and 30% responded no. There was 10 comments listed underneath the question and every comment was from the 70% who said yes and no one from the 30% commented to support why they said no. From the people that said yes their comments said that art changes lives, it's a good subject in school, art inspires life and social change, it's important to development...etc. Everyone of these comments had something positive to say when discussing why art should stay in school.
This debate website would connect to a direct democracy because the people can say their opinion and speak their voice. The people are allowed to get involved in the government and issues occurring in the government. This website would also be similar to a poll. I say this because the researchers are collecting data to show how many people want art in the education and how many people don't. The polls also involve the people and would be an Internet panel or a media poll if declaring which type of poll it would be. Right off the bat this article goes straight into why art is needed for every school. The editor of this article describes how art impacts children and it is a necessary need. Art helps promote skills children will need in their daily lives and in their future as they grow up. Art improves learning and sharpens the creative mind of how children can think outside the box and have unique ways of doing projects, Teachers strongly suggest art and always see improvement when kids learn and use art in their daily lives. This article states how the economy is not doing good and if the economy goes down further art is going to be the first program to be cut. By the government or districts cutting art programs, they do save money, but the children and adults who love art now lose what they wanted in life. If the schools decide to keep art as a program, some schools are limited of classroom space and again art is cut and the art teacher does not even have her own classroom. Instead she or he has to push a cart around and teach from other teacher's classrooms instead of their own studios. This article wants to keep art and continue using art to reach out to people and to connect with meaning and emotions instead of cutting art off completely and never using creativity again.
